All Dried Up!

Shalom Y’all!

We had an exciting weekend. While cities across the country were being drenched with too much precipitation in the form of rain, snow and ice, we were in a virtual desert when our well pump went out.

Here I was, happily singing in the shower when all of the sudden the water stopped. It did not trickle, it did not decrease in pressure giving me time to wash off, it stopped dead.

I thought I had inadvertently hit the water button and tried unsuccessfully to restart the shower. So, I tried the sink faucet, but it too was dry.

In normal wifely fashion, I sent a message via our son down to my hubby in his den askingmy husband to fix the shower.

After some sleuthing of breaker switches, pressure tank evaluations, checking contacts and whatnots, he determined that our well pump was not working for some unknown reason.

Being that it was a Saturday evening on a holiday weekend, no one was returning my calls about coming out to check our well pump. So, we had to come up with ways to find some water to drink, wash, brush teeth and flush the 3 commodes in the house.

What we did was to buy plastic plates, bowls and utensils. We gathered the ice from the refrigerator’s ice maker and dumped it in our 5-gallon gravity water filter. We used this filtered water to drink and brush teeth. To flush the commodes we filled 3 5-gallon buckets from water from our neighbor’s gravity water source.

We made it enjoyable for the children by pretending we were out camping (which we never do by the way and don’t have a clue what it would be like, but we were wingin’ it!). The children didn’t have to take their baths and that was a plus for them as well!

Early Monday morning, the well guys showed up and pulled our well pump up to examine it and found a broken wire from the pump. We jumped for joy! We had been told to expect a $700-$1,000. charge for replacing a burned out pump, we were overjoyed to find the pump working once the electric wire was replaced at a much smaller fee.

Yeah!! I never thought I’d be so happy to do laundry and dishes again! And, oh, a shower was definitely in store for me once the hot water heater had time to recharge.

But, our feisty little 7-year old daughter piped up amidst all the rejoicing and said “I really liked not having water, it was so much fun. Can’t we do it some more?” Ahhh, to be young again with no worries!

Needless to say, we did not honor her request, although we will use the plastic plates and utensils for supper, just because it’s fun.

The moral of the story is to appreciate the water, for you never know when it may dry up. 🙂
