Shalom Y’all!
My husband and I have been trying for years to get an organic garden going. When we had our 5-acre homestead in West Virginia, we tried but found our homestead was built on rock and the only place we could till up for a garden was near the pond – where deer would eat the seedlings before they could grow.
When we moved to our present home, we tilled up a small plot for a garden and planted a few lovely seedlings, only to see them wither and die being eaten by our huge rabbit population inhabiting the wild blackberry thickets surrounding our property.
In addition, poor hubby and I are old 🙂 and we both have physical limitations. Bending over and weeding the garden was simply an impossibility. Then one day I was reading about container gardening using the new Earthbox system which includes a reservoir to keep the moisture in and a plastic cover to keep the critters and weeds out. I was intrigued!!

So, we ordered some Earthboxes and while we were waiting for them to arrive, my friend Jeanie told me that she had 5 “extra” Earthboxes (older models) lying around her storage area and asked if I wanted them. Did I?? Of course!! I was more than excited!
But, we still had the problem of the containers being on the ground, so we had a friend build some tables big enough and sturdy enough to hold our Earthbox gardens. We had to move some Earthboxes to the ground though because the fruit would be very heavy and the table could not offer enough support (squash, zucchini, melons). So, we put the EB’s on cinderblocks between the tables.
This is our first year, so we decided to go slow and not get overwhelmed. If this year works out well, we plan on more crops for next year.
Here is our Earthbox Garden for 2007
