Every time you enter a store with general items, whether it’s a grocery store, discount store, warehouse store or dollar store, think about picking up items for your non-food storage.
Every time you shop.
Make a list of your 10 most used / most important items (supplies, over-the-counter medications, hygiene etc.) Each family’s list will be different. If 10 items at once are too much to add to your shopping list each store run, try making several lists of 5 items and rotating each list for different shopping trips. Whenever you shop (even if it’s just to grab a pack of gum or a bag of dog food), pick up as many of these items as you can budget.

This is our family’s list and items I try to buy these whenever anyone in our family shops:
1. Toilet paper
Yes, you can buy or make resusable cloths instead of buying toilet paper for your own family. However, some people will not use cloths and toilet paper will be an important “essential” item for those who prefer not to use cloths, or for barter or for helping others.
2. Baking soda
This ingredient has SO many uses for cooking, baking, health, cleaning and homemade products such as deodorant and toothpaste. Make a paste of baking soda and water, rib it on a fresh insect bite to remove pain and swelling.
3. White vinegar
Also, an important item which can be used for many applications such as cleaning-alone or mixed with baking soda for washing clothes, cleaning tubs and more.

These are inexpensive and most everyone enjoys having a one.
5. Toothpaste, Deodorant, Shampoo, Toiletries, Feminine Needs
Even if you make your own, having backups and some to barter or help others.
Different sizes, rotating each time you buy.
7. Sanitizer and soap
Whatever you use for these needs. We make most our own using essential oils, baking soda, vinegar, but we do buy some as well. Again, good items to stock up on as another layer for your family and for others.
8. Underwear, Socks, Undergarments
I rotate purchasing these for different family members, but I try to get something for someone whenever I shop.
9. Bandages, First Aid items, Epsom salt
We use epsom salt often for detoxing and pain relieving baths. We also like to have a good stock of hydrogen peroxide and first aid items.
10. Benadryl capsules or other OTC medications you use
Benadryl can be used for sleep, allergic reactions or allergies. If you use other OTC items such as lotions, creams, sprays pick these up.
What items are on your “every time you shop” list?
