No-Shopping November Day Nine

Day Nine. Sunday is a usually a busy day for me. After resting on Sabbath (Saturday), I am usually feeling up to doing kitchen work, replenishing the stocks, baking, cooking etc. We usually do laundry as well, especially if I am baking (I am a messy baker / cook). I awoke early to watch church online and enjoyed the quiet time as the rest of the family sleeps late.

I am still in a quandry about what I wrote yesterday concerning how to keep us from snacking on foods that need to be used for meals. I’ve gotten some good advice from my online sisters, but I’m still praying about what to do. I feel I must ask for a Family Meeting and lay it out, but not wishing to embarrass anyone, or make anyone feel as if they cannot eat, I need to be gracious in how I approach this topic.

I am being very, very thrifty with my eggs. I only have a dozen and 1/2 to last the rest of the month, and I prior to this, I could easily go through 4-6 dozen a week. The family loves scrambled eggs, waffles, muffins, etc. and when I use coconut flour, it takes more eggs than with other flours. This morning I made our Baked Oatmeal, but instead of using 4 eggs, I used flax seed egg replacer. It works great in this recipe.

Day Nine

Beauty / Health
Since I took over washing the dishes from hubby, and ceased all usage of dish soap (even very diluted), I am very happy with the results of using only baking soda. The dishes and utensils we wash in the dishwasher (on anti-bacterial cycle) using only vinegar are coming out great as well. I’m so glad that we are not using the dish soap. I seem to react badly to it and cannot get the smell and taste out of the containers and food. I’m going to be trying some different techniques regarding dish washing, but still only using baking soda for hand washing and vinegar for the dishwasher. I’d like to stop using the dishwasher, but I want to make sure the dishes are sanitized, especially with cold and flu season coming up. To sanitize dishes without a dishwasher, and without bleach, they need to be soaked in hot water with temps greater than 170 degrees F.

Thoughts
Huge lessons learned today. I cannot replace everything that we do not have but are used to having. Case in point, chips. My family really loves salty, crunchy chips, so I buy the best, organic corn chips and everyone eats them freely. Because they are a short-term item, and I was planning on buying more with my November Azure order, we ran out of them pretty quickly. I decided to make crackers. I’ve made them before and they are not very hard to make. However, they do take some upper arm strength (to roll the dough very, very thin) and frankly, my family doesn’t like them as much as they like chips. but, in my efforts to try to replace their favorite foods we’re not buying, I made making crackers a priority yesterday. Big mistake.  I ran out of energy with all the rolling and standing, and the recipe I made (no-egg, gluten-free) did not hold up well and became soft, not crispy, in only a few hours. Very disappointing. The other crackers I made (whole wheat hardtack) held up, but if you’ve ever had hardtack, you’ll know they are HARD to chew. I may try again, with a different recipe, but get help in the rolling efforts.

Good lessons. Pick my battles. Prioritize the foods we need and like, but know that I cannot replace everything. Some foods we will have to accept we no longer have on hand.

PS. The soft gluten-free crackers will make a great toasted breadcrumb replacement for salmon patties or meatloaf. 🙂
