Day Seven seems like Day Twenty-Seven to me. Hmmmmm. Life is getting interesting and I am making all sorts of notes and plans to improve as we replenish.

Today was yet another doctor’s appointment in town (the third one this week!), this time for The Princess, our youngest daughter. As always when we have to go into town, it takes up most of the day and takes up most of our energy, thus the cooking plan should have already been in place and / or the food made. Sometimes, we would stop and eat while in town, or grab something to bring home if I hadn’t gotten my food at home ready. Due to the No-Shopping November, that includes not eating out and buying anything to supplement our food storage. We can only use what we have on hand. So, we came home and I was thankful I had prepared homemade chicken soup, matzah ball batter, hummus and I was planning on making quick gluten-free crackers, however, my energy crashed and I went to sleep. I am even more thankful that there was plenty to eat for the family and they made use of it.
Day Seven
Beauty / Health
I used the homemade “dry shampoo” on my hair before we left and I washed my hair with baking soda and rinsed with vinegar upon my return.
Kitchen
Removed spent chicken bones from slow cooker, drained stock and placed it in the fridge to chill and for the fat to solidify
Mashed up the soft bones and remaining skin and scraps for pet food. The dog and cats love it. *Note: I mash the bones REALLY well so they cannot splinter
Made matzah ball batter and placed it in the fridge to chill
Made hummus and stored it in the fridge
Menu
Breakfast before going to town
Bagels (last of), muffins
Lunch when we got home
Sandwiches on homemade bread
Supper
Homemade pizza, leftovers from Saucy Chicken and Broccoli
Thoughts:
I am cognizant of the fact that this Winter is projected to be very harsh and we might lose power and / or be stuck here and need our food storage. I would not choose NOW to use our food storage if it were a choice, but it is necessary, so I am praying that we will be able to replenish what we need before we need it. I’m also pretty surprised that my perception of where we are in our No-Shop month based on what we have on hand is much further down the line. However, the reality is that we are using up our first “layer” of food storage (perishables and freezer) and in fact, we have not dipped into the items stored for long-term. What I am seeing / feeling is the unavailability of the things we buy often, and have run out of. It’s a disconcerting feeling and I have to remind myself of the reality that our food stores are not empty, just our perishables and often-purchased items.
